Good Luck. Please help! I'm sorry something made it come back. I also then took the effort to turn off Automatic Updates unless I allow it.

i would not have been able to ever dream up a solution like this and it totally worked. It occurs only on the laptop running Microsoft Vista with Office 2007. After it happened twice, I figured I needed to save the fix information so I don't chase it down every time. I subscribed to this site.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data. I was surprised to find out after that the same instructions are posted on Microsoft's support site, along with the admission that this is caused by automatic updates: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;940791 Editing the after 5 minutes started again. Some research seems to point to add-ins. I can correct the problem by starting Word from a command prompt without add-ins C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\winword.exe /a So now to correct the problem.
