- They have to do with bad design.
- If it works there, it's definitely a software problem that might be cured by an OS reinstallation.
- If the keyboard still refuses to work correctly, exchange it for another with Apple.
- Seems to be a common problem.

I am using the wired keyboard now through a simple unpowered 4 port hub but I can't use the USB ports in the keyboard. that doesn't seem like it should be a software issue. I already had the extension on it when it suddenly stopped working. Holding down power button 5 sec after rebooting works for me, but this should be happening at all! It just will not work reliably with my iMac, new in 2012 running Snow leopard. New keyboard works fine BTW.A Google search showed I wasn't the only one with the problem. I have a wired keyboard connected to my 2010 iMac and a month ago it started to stop working. keyboard stopped working, used the extension lead fix, worked for a few days, but then suddenly stopped working again.
