How To Enable Search Option In Windows Xp

This was a recent XP install (months) and I got a whole lot of updates all at once, but the search worked fine for quite a while until recently (weeks). If you are running a newer version of Windows, then Reroute XP will not work anyway. I would like to avoid this if anyone can give me some direction or input. If it's considered irrelevant to ask to for details, I feel I must bow out.

So far nothing has worked and the only thing I have not yet tried was re-installing teh whole OS. The first is by clicking the Start Menu, and clicking Search; the second is by right clicking My Computer and clicking Search. About Ramblings of Nathan Allen-Wagner.
